Top Foodie Reads for this Bank Holiday

We are naturally a bunch of foodies here at Bahlsen, and for many of us, it doesn’t just stop at our biscuits! We have been chatting on the office about our top ‘foodie reads’ and thought that we would share with you – call it bank holiday reading inspiration! Julie and Julia – Julie Powell

Julie & Julia is the story of a culinary blogging sensation. It is the story of Julie Powell, who lives in a tiny apartment in New York and trapped in a job she hates, feeling as though life passing her by. One night, she notices that the few items she bought from a Korean grocery shop are the same that is needed for a Potage Parmentier recipe, as described in Julia Child's legendary cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

From doing this, Julie starts a project, and begins to cook every single one of the 524 recipes in the book, in just one year. Soon ‘The Project’ is all she can think about. Both touching and hilarious, this is a gem of a read.

Eat Pray Love – Elizabeth Gilbert

Elizabeth Gilbert makes a tough choice to leave behind her successful life, (marriage, house in the country, career) and instead go and find what she truly wants from life. She decides to set out for a year of travel to study three different aspects of her nature. She explores the art of pleasure consuming Italy’s delights; the world's best pizza, good wine and dashing conversation partners (eat – our favourite!) and the art of devotion in India (pray), and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali (love). Gilbert's self-deprecating humour and wonderful descriptive language make this a joyful and feast of a book!

Chocolat – Joanne Harris

Perfect paired with – Our decadent Choco Leibniz Dark

When exotic and mysterious stranger Vianne Rocher arrives in the French village of Lansquenet with her daughter and opens a beautiful tempting chocolate shop directly opposite the church at the beginning of Lent, Father Reynaud denounces her as a serious moral danger to his flock. One by one the locals of the village cave in to Vianne's delicious chocolates and hot drinks. However, certain villagers side with Father Reynaud. So when Vianne announces a Grand Festival of Chocolate commencing Easter Sunday, it's all-out war between the villagers. This is a truly sumptuous book and will leave you craving chocolate so definitely have a box of Choco Leibniz biscuits handy!

Mistress of Spices – Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

This story follows Tilo, an immigrant from India who runs an Indian spice shop in California. While she dispenses the classic ingredients for curries and kormas, she also helps her customers to gain something more precious: whatever they most desire.

Many characters come to visit Tilo’s shop, such as Ahuja's wife, caught in an unhappy, abusive marriage and the noisy bougainvillaea girls, rejecting the strict upbringing of their tradition-bound parents. Tilo dispenses wisdom and the appropriate spice for each of them: coriander for sight; turmeric to erase wrinkles; cinnamon for finding friends; chillies for the cleansing of evil. For Tilo is a Mistress of Spices, a priestess of a secret who holds the magical powers of spices. However when a lonely American man comes into the shop, Tilo cannot find the right spice, for he arouses in her a forbidden desire, and following her own desires will destroy her magical powers. Reading this book transports you straight into the spice shop – you can almost smell the spice in the air!

Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Café – Milly Johnson

Milly Johnson’s newest novel is out next month, (June 2015) and is another book in our list with a chocolate theme!

Connie Diamond has always been her husband Jimmy's 'best girl' - or so she thought. But then she discovers that he's been playing away for the past twenty-four years, and that the chocolates she believed he bought her as a sign of his love were just a cover-up, and she is determined to get revenge. Along with Della Frostick, Jimmy's right-hand woman at his cleaning firm, Diamond Shine, Connie decides to destroy Jimmy's life from the inside. Together they will set up a rival business called Lady Muck, and along with the cleaning ladies who meet at the Sunflower Café, they'll make him wish he had never so much as looked at another woman. 

Then Connie meets the charming Brandon Locke, a master chocolatier, whose kind chocolate-brown eyes start to melt her soul. Can the ladies of the Sunflower Café help Connie scrub away the hurt? And can Brandon cure her affliction and make her smile again?

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle-Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

Perfect paired with – Our moorish First Class Milk Chocolate

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle-Stop Cafe is the story of two women in the 1980s; grey-haired Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women- the irrepressibly daredevil tomboy Idgie and her best friend Ruth. They both ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, in the thirties, a Southern café offering good barbecue food and good coffee combined with love and laughter, and even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present will never quite be the same.
